How a Kangaroo Island Tour Works
Where the island is and how far everything is, the day stop by stop, what it costs and includes, Seal Bay with its beach paused, Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, one day or more, and driving yourself.
Kangaroo Island lies off the South Australian coast south-west of Adelaide, across Backstairs Passage from Cape Jervis. The SeaLink ferry crosses to Penneshaw in about 45 minutes, and Cape Jervis is 108 km by road from Adelaide Central Bus Station. A Kangaroo Island tour from Adelaide is therefore one long day or a trip of two or three days, built around the same sights: the Australian sea lions at Seal Bay, and Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch in Flinders Chase National Park at the island’s western end. The day carded first here is SeaLink South Australia’s Kangaroo Island Full Day Experience by Ferry Including Lunch, from US$280 a person (checked November 2026), with 1,467 reviews and the coach, the ferry, lunch, hotel pickup and national park entry fees in the price.
The short answer
Book the SeaLink day if you are in Adelaide with one day and no car: it settles the coach, the ferry, the park fees and lunch, and it reaches Seal Bay, Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch. Expect a 16-hour day, back in Adelaide about 22:40. One thing to know before you book: listings describe a guided walk on the beach at Seal Bay; NPWS paused beach access from 17 August 2026 because of bird flu, and the boardwalk stays open with a roaming guide (as of November 2026). You still see the sea lion colony, from the boardwalk above the beach. With two days to spare, a 2-day tour from Adelaide adds the north coast and a night on the island; if you are already on the island, a small-group day that starts there is shorter and smaller.

Where everything is

The coach days leave from Adelaide and run south through the Fleurieu Peninsula to the SeaLink terminal at Cape Jervis, 108 km by road from Adelaide Central Bus Station. Across Backstairs Passage, about 18 km in a straight line, the ferry lands at Penneshaw on the island’s eastern tip. From there the island is a long drive: by road, Penneshaw is 60 km from Kingscote, the main town, 96 km from Seal Bay and 156 km from Remarkable Rocks, and the day’s loop from Penneshaw to Admirals Arch by way of Seal Bay is about 185 km each way (routed, without stops). That is why the day from Adelaide takes 16 hours. Can you do it in one day? works through the hours.
The day, stop by stop
The day starts with hotel pickup in Adelaide, or at Adelaide Central Bus Station on Franklin Street, and a coach ride south past the vineyards and coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula to Cape Jervis. The SeaLink ferry takes about 45 minutes to Penneshaw, where a local driver-guide takes over on the island. The first stop is Seal Bay Conservation Park and its colony of Australian sea lions; listings describe a guided walk on the beach, and since 17 August 2026 NPWS has paused beach access, so the colony is seen from the boardwalk with a roaming guide (as of November 2026). Lunch is two courses. The afternoon is in Flinders Chase National Park, with the walk around the granite of Remarkable Rocks and the boardwalk down the cliff to Admirals Arch, where long-nosed fur seals rest on the rocks. Then the coach back to Penneshaw, the ferry and the coach to Adelaide, arriving about 22:40 at a selected Adelaide CBD accommodation. You rest on the ferry and the coach legs. The tour does not run on Christmas Day.
What it costs, and what the price buys
SeaLink South Australia’s day is from US$280 a person on GetYourGuide (checked November 2026), with free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance. The price covers the air-conditioned coach, the return ferry, the local driver-guide’s commentary, a 2-course lunch, national park entry fees, hotel pickup and drop-off, and a temporary fuel surcharge of $5 per person per day applied to new bookings from 29 April 2026, which is included in the final tour price. Snacks and drinks are not included. Tell the operator about dietary needs when you book.
Booked separately, the pieces it bundles are a SeaLink ferry fare from A$49 an adult each way, Seal Bay boardwalk entry at A$20.70 and Flinders Chase one-day entry at A$14.90 (SeaLink and NPWS, checked November 2026), before the coach to Cape Jervis and any transport on the island.
Seal Bay, with the beach paused
Seal Bay Conservation Park on the south coast is home to a colony of Australian sea lions, an endangered species. The National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia (NPWS) paused beach access from 17 August 2026 after H5 bird flu was detected in wild seabirds at the site; Seal Bay stays open, a roaming guide interprets along the boardwalk, no booking is needed and tickets are sold at the Seal Bay Visitor Centre (NPWS, as of November 2026). The wheelchair-accessible boardwalk runs 900 metres return through the dunes to viewing platforms over the beach and the colony. Boardwalk entry is A$20.70 for an adult and A$12.40 for a child, and the park is open 9am to 5pm daily except Christmas Day, last entry 4pm. NPWS has printed no reopening date for the beach. Seal Bay has the detail and the tours that stop there.
Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch
Both sit in Flinders Chase National Park at the western end of the island, about 5 km apart in a straight line. Remarkable Rocks are granite boulders on a dome above the sea, their visitor facilities rebuilt after the 2019-20 bushfires with a new boardwalk and platform; Admirals Arch is a sea arch near the Cape du Couedic lighthouse, reached by a boardwalk down the cliff. NPWS warns that both may close in damaging winds. One-day entry to the park is A$14.90 for an adult (NPWS, valid to 30 June 2027), and it is in the price of the coach days from Adelaide. Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch covers the fees and the Kangaroo Island Tour Pass.
One day, or two or three
The day from Adelaide reaches the island’s two best-known sights and little else. The 2-day tours from Adelaide add the north coast, Stokes Bay, the dunes of Little Sahara and a night on the island in a bell tent: See Adelaide & Beyond's 2-day tour is from US$623 and Untamed Escapes' 3-day camping tour from US$627 on promotion, usually US$738 (checked November 2026). 2 or 3 day tours sets them beside the day trip.
Driving yourself instead
With a car, you can do the island at your own pace. SeaLink carries cars from Cape Jervis from A$99 one way for a vehicle up to 5 m, and foot passengers from A$49 an adult (checked November 2026), with prices that vary with demand and time of travel. On the island you pay the park fees yourself, A$20.70 at Seal Bay and A$14.90 at Flinders Chase for an adult, and you drive about 185 km from Penneshaw to Admirals Arch by way of Seal Bay, and the same back. Over two days or more that is a fine way to see the island; in a single day from Adelaide it is a lot of driving, on top of 108 km each way to Cape Jervis. Driving yourself has the distances and the ferry.
When to go
The coach day runs all year except Christmas Day, and the Australian winter, May to October, is the better time to see more wildlife. Flinders Chase closes on Catastrophic fire danger days, and Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch may close in damaging winds (NPWS). Whatever the month, check the NPWS alert for Seal Bay before you go; the pause on beach access had no end date when it was checked in November 2026.
