Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island: The Boardwalk, the Paused Beach and the Fees
Seal Bay is open, but NPWS paused beach access from 17 August 2026 because of bird flu. The boardwalk, the A$20.70 entry, the hours, and what each tour's Seal Bay stop is.
Seal Bay Conservation Park, on the south coast of Kangaroo Island, is home to a colony of Australian sea lions, and it is open. The National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia (NPWS) paused access to the beach from 17 August 2026 after H5 bird flu was detected in wild seabirds at the site; visitors see the colony from the boardwalk, with a roaming guide (NPWS, as of November 2026). Boardwalk entry is A$20.70 for an adult. SeaLink South Australia’s Kangaroo Island Full Day Experience by Ferry Including Lunch stops here, from US$280 a person (checked November 2026) with park entry in the price.
The calendar above is the coach and ferry day from Adelaide, with 1,467 reviews (checked November 2026). Listings describe a guided walk on the beach at Seal Bay; NPWS paused beach access from 17 August 2026 because of bird flu, and the boardwalk stays open with a roaming guide (as of November 2026).
The short answer
Yes, Seal Bay is still worth the stop: the sea lions are on the beach below the boardwalk, and the viewing platforms look straight over the colony. What you cannot do, as of November 2026, is walk on the beach among them. Every tour that lists a guided beach walk is working to the same NPWS pause, so do not choose between tours on that line. No end date for the pause had been printed when it was checked.
What NPWS has paused, and why
NPWS’s alert, published on 17 August 2026 and still shown in November 2026, says access to the beach has been temporarily paused to help protect the sea lion colony; Seal Bay remains open, a roaming guide provides interpretation along the boardwalk, no booking is required and tickets are bought at the Seal Bay Visitor Centre. Its bird flu page explains that H5 bird flu has been detected in wild seabirds on Kangaroo Island and at the site, and that Seal Bay is an important Australian sea lion breeding colony. The risk of bird flu to people in Australia is low, NPWS adds, but visitors should not touch sick or dead birds or other animals; at Seal Bay, report them to a staff member, and elsewhere call the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
The boardwalk, the hours and the fees
The boardwalk runs 900 metres return through the dunes to viewing platforms over the beach and the colony, and it is wheelchair accessible. NPWS suggests allowing half an hour, sets a 45-minute limit at busy times, and recommends coming before 11am or after 1pm for fewer people. Seal Bay is open 9am to 5pm every day except Christmas Day, with last entry at 4pm. It lies on Seal Bay Road on the south coast, 57 km by road from Kingscote and 96 km from the ferry at Penneshaw (routed).

Since every tour now meets the colony from the boardwalk, pick on the rest of the day: from Adelaide or from the island, one day or two, and what else it reaches.

Sea lions here, fur seals at Admirals Arch
Kangaroo Island has both. The colony at Seal Bay is Australian sea lions (NPWS). The seals at Admirals Arch, in Flinders Chase National Park at the western end of the island, are long-nosed fur seals, resting on the rocks below the boardwalk; the coach day from Adelaide stops at both. Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch covers the second stop.
